"Indifference and neglect often do much more damage than outright dislike."
~ J.K. Rowling
Oh, how we have all been guilty of this most offensive of human behaviors.
We walk past with eyes averted, hoping our hearts will soon follow suit. But our minds are forever captured by that single image, of another human suffering under Poverty's ills.
And yet, we look away ~ we hurry our pace, fearful to connect to that human heart begging our service...and too afraid to gaze into the haunting, glassy eyes of humanity's disapproval.
What is it that keeps us away?
What creates this space of detachment, to recognize and respond to the basic needs of other beings?
What is it that allows indifference to settle in?
Aren't we all most human after all?
My dears, the greatest of change begins in this moment right here ~ a simple decision to not ever look away, and a realization that help comes in so many different ways.
A kind heart... a listening ear... a thoughtful gaze. A few pennies, maybe? Reaching out to a friend... let us count the ways, instead of days.
Because, my dears... my most beautiful friends... this world very much needs your love.
Stop looking away on this day.
Bonus: Encounters on the Exit Ramp
At one of the busiest intersections in Los Angeles, California stood a person, destitute and holding a sign which read simply, "Can you spare a moment? Blessings appreciated." Many cars passed by without notice, as seems to have become the analogy in how many of us live our lives. To those passing by, this was just another homeless person looking for a handout. They had no way of knowing that this "outcast" was actually a highly successful Hollywood film maker seeking a new perspective on life and living.
Take a moment to read how one simple act of standing alone on an exit ramp forever changed this writer's perspective.
