Surrendering to Stillness. (Newest elephant journal article)

Source: cityrag.com via Tara on Pinterest

“In the place of stillness, rises potential. From the place of potential, emerges possibility. Where there is possibility, there is choice. And where there is choice, there is freedom.”

~ Gabriella Goddard

We’ve all had them, those days in which the moments seem to fly at us far too quickly—causing us, at times, to metaphorically reach our hands forward in hopes of finding that big, cosmic ‘pause’ button.
These are the days which may leave us feeling most disconnected, drained and discouraged. And, these are the days that often challenge us the most.

And on these such days, as it sometimes often is, we may feel the inclination to hide ourselves, and tuck away again—retreating to the safety and comfort of our own cozy beds.

And as we peer out through the smallest break in our sheets, a little voice may rise up from deep within us—pleading with this universe, to just and very simply, “Please go away, just for today.”

But that trickster, self-doubt, will find his way through even the smallest of breaks—causing us to stop right there in our tracks, and question, “Am I really able to do this, just me on my own?”
These are the days we need most to surrender—to find a way to soften and bend, to fall into that space where our minds can most rest again.

And yet, in these moments, we are often ‘frozen’ in this space of resistance and fear. In not knowing our ‘way forward,’ we may find that we don’t move at all. We are afraid to do, so we don’t do at all. Instead, we grip on for dear life to those little things that maybe don’t matter most of all.

If only, we might simply just let it all go—we might find, that surrendering is one of the most beautifully empowering things we can ever do. And, in this act of letting go, we may find a freedom we’ve not ever known.

So, how do we find the bliss of our own inner stillness?

Step One: Breathe.

The first step in any and all things, is always just to breathe. To take that one moment to pause—to shut off this world and all of the stuff in it. And in doing so, you may find that your breath is that one constant that will carry you through—even when the chaos might threaten to engulf us all. Your breath connects directly and straight through to your heart—in breathing in, you find a comfort…and in breathing out, your hope is restored again.

So, as you peek out from beneath that crack in your bed, remember to take that one single moment, to breathe—and as you breath, learn to let it all go, again.

Step Two: Be still and learn to become one with your own stillness.

Because:
“When you lose touch with inner stillness, you lose touch with yourself. When you lose touch with yourself, you lose yourself in the world.” ~ Eckhart Tolle
Let your stillness become your sanctuary, your blissful retreat. Fall into it, and find your most perfect center. Become the ‘eye’ of your own inner storm and in doing so reconnect your mind with your spirit once again.

Let your stillness find you, and when it finds you—feel it. In doing so, you’ll find that your own inner quiet, is greater than any outside forces.

Step Three: Let go.

When did letting go become such a God-awful thing to do? And when did letting go become such a great sign of weakness, or shame?

To surrender does not mean we are ‘giving up’ or ‘giving in’—rather, it means that we are making a choice to meet life exactly where it is.

So, loosen up that ‘death grip’—on all those things that are bothering you most. I promise you, your letting go will go mostly unnoticed in the faster pace of this more crazier world.

And I doubt that you’ll be labeled a weakling or wimp, because, surrendering isn’t about giving in—rather, it’s more about knowing most when to let go.

But, greater still is this learning—an understanding, that sometimes it’s not always the what, but rather, the who we need to surrender to most of all.

So take a moment in your day today, to feel this bliss of your own inner stillness. Find your freedom, if even in the smallest of things.

Because, in this greater process of letting it all go, you might just win it all back in the end.

5 Extraordinarily Ordinary People & the Stories That Most Amaze Us.

Everyday, in every moment, we have the opportunity to make a change. And all you have to do, is be your most beautiful you.

“Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve…You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love.”
~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
As we move into this new year, and we reflect upon our past inner ‘year to date’—we might also take a moment to consider the littlest things that can be done to make this world an even more extraordinary place.

It doesn’t take a pile of money, or a butt-load of time. And you don’t have to be a rock star, or a politician, or a super-amazing thought leader. Because, at the very foundation of all great acts there is one fundamental thing in common: love.

Love can take us anywhere and can do for others what to many may seem to be the impossible.

These are just a very few of this world’s most extraordinarily ordinary people and the stories which inspire us most.

Where will love take you today?

1. Paralyzed from the chest down since a car accident at age thirteen, Matthew Sanford is a pioneer in adapting yoga for those with disabilities. Matthew’s passion for communicating a life without limits has inspired millions and helped make yoga a possibility for all.

2. By most standards, Curtis Jackson has nothing. Homeless and destitute, he stands each day holding a small cardboard sign, asking for even the smallest bit of change from each passerby. I’m sure we’ve all passed a Curtis Jackson at some point in our lives, and wondered their story—or even more cynically, perhaps, what they might be doing with the money collected.

But on this day, Curtis Jackson isn’t here for his own personal gain. He is here for a much larger purpose; to help alleviate the suffering of a young mother, displaced from her home and struggling to survive with her 10-year-old son. And so on this day, Curtis greets each passerby with a smile and a purpose—to raise what little change he may so that this young mother and her son may have a safe place to sleep. To date, Curtis has raised over $9,000, taking only enough to pay for his own food and hot coffee each day. In Curtis’ spirit, we may see the true meaning of compassion and generosity and most importantly, of having nothing, and giving all.

3. Holocaust survivor Alice Herz Sommer was an inmate of the The Terezin concentration camp. Surrounded by death and evil and all those things that might otherwise crush our spirits, Alice found her way to her most beautiful inner peace. Through music, she reached deep into her spirit and found a peace unlike anything she had ever known. When asked how it she is able to preserve her optimism and hope, Alice replies simply, “Life is beautiful…wherever you look is beauty.” In Alice we learn that we see this world that surrounds us, not the way it is, but rather the way we are.

4. Veronika Scott, a 21-year-old design student, watched each year as the ever-increasing population of homeless suffered brutally through the harsh Detroit winters. There seemed no hope, until one day Veronika was inspired to use her talents to make a change. In that single moment she created the Element S. Coat—a waterproof, and self-heating garment that could easily transform into a sleeping bag at night. And though, initially each coat was stitched lovingly by Veronika’s own hands—now, the coats are produced by a group of homeless women who are employed through Veronika’s organization, The Empowerment Plan. In this way, Veronika not only found a way to provide comfort, but in her simple act of kindness and ingenuity, she discovered a way to empower and to give hope again.

 5. And last, but certainly not least of all—Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who’s vision inspired a nation to change, and who’s courage showed us the path to achieve it. God bless you, Dr. King—for it is because of you, that this dream remains.

“An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.” ~ Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

And so, as you take each step into your busy day and notice those, the ones you are often just passing by—remember, always, that it only takes just one very small act of loving kindness to ripple out and change this world. Take a chance and be that change today.

A Moment of Mindfulness.

I was able to enjoy a short walk with the pups this morning—they have a way of 'nudging' me when I seem to need it most. I thought of Thich Nhat Hanh and his talks of 'walking meditation'...

"According to the teaching and the practice of the Buddha, life is available only in the present moment, in the here and the now. And when you go back to the present moment, you have a chance to touch life, to encounter life, to become fully alive and fully present. "

So this morning, I walked through the woods with my pups at my side—stopping to place my hand against the rough bark of a tree.

In an odd way, I could *feel* it's energy—coming from the earth, and back to me. I closed my eyes and took in the deepest breath, allowing my lungs to fill and stretch.

And in that moment, I could hear all of this earth and all the most wonderful things in it—birds flying swiftly overhead, squirrels chasing tails in the tree... I could hear the wind call me through the highest leaves on the tree.

And in that moment, that one single moment—I knew everything would be ok.

So, my hope for all of you this most wonderful day - is that each and every step you take will bring you that much closer to this mindfulness.

Breathe deep today—breathe deep, and let the whole world fill you up...

 xo

The Gift Staring Back in the Glass. (New Article)

The best gift you can ever receive, is the one staring back at you.

I was cleaning up today—sifting through old memories, and making room for more. And, as is often the case in my sifting about—I came across something that was so very special to me. It was a hand-written note given to me on the day of my graduation, and before I set out into this great, big world.

And though, at first I thought these words would serve as a reminder—in time, I realized they had become my “compass.”

The words were quite simple enough, as they often are in messages of the most profound meaning. It helps the message make its way through sometimes, when the mind is maybe not quite ready.

And so, as I hold this tattered paper in my hands—I’m thinking now of all the places I have been, the people I have met, and the love that has been shared along this way. And, in this moment, I am ever-grateful for these few short words scribbled onto this well-worn piece of paper.

So, tonight I will share these words again with you—in hopes, they might find their way into a new life, and a brand new life’s adventure. I hope you don’t mind that I’ve taken the liberty of a little careful wordsmithing—after all, the poem was written in the early 1930′s and how could the author have known that we women would soon take on and change this world?

We should all be so lucky to have the gift of a compass handed to us on our graduation day. And, then hopefully have the sense enough to hold onto it.

The Man Gal in the Glass

When you get what you want in your struggle for self
And the world makes you king for a day,
Just go to a mirror and look at yourself,
And see what that man has to say.
For it isn’t your father or mother or wife,
Who judgment upon you must pass;
The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the one starring back from the glass.
He’s the fellow to please, never mind all the rest.
For he’s with you clear up to the end,
And you’ve passed the most dangerous, difficult test
If the man in the glass is your friend.
You may be like Jack Horner and “chisel” a plum,
And think you’re a wonderful guy,
But the man in the glass says you’re only a bum
If you can’t look him straight in the eye.
You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years.
And get pats on the back as you pass,
But your final reward will be the heartaches and tears
If you’ve cheated the man in the glass.

Let’s Hear it for the Unsung Heroes. (Elephant 1/16)

“Heaven goes by favor. If it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in.” ~ Mark Twain

“Let’s hear it for the unsung heroes,
The ones that are sometimes missed.
The ones who ask not a thing in return,
When the hardship of war finally hits.
Let’s hear it for the unsung heroes,
The ones who stay fast by our side.
The ones whose heart will always stay strong,
When the strength of the spirit subsides.”
~ Tara Lemieux

They spend their days protecting our troops—our sons and daughters of war. Working tirelessly, and always in harms way—they put their paws first and before any soldiers boot.

They keep our troops safe from ambush, sniffing out hidden caches of ammunition or camouflaged encampments.

And they ask nothing in return, save for the loving pat of their military handlers.

These are the dogs of war. And now, through an act of Congress—these unseen heroes will finally be recognized, as the first National monument to pay tribute to these working dogs of war will be unveiled. The U.S. Working Dog Teams National Monument will pay honor to every single dog that has ever served in combat since World War II.

I think it’s about time we celebrate. Because, these heroes need our support and love, too.

My Simple Steps for Living Fearlessly.

The greatest test of courage on earth is to bear defeat without losing heart.

~Robert Green Ingersoll

I began my last week with yet another trip to my cardiologist, followed by a CAT scan, an echo cardiogram and lots of “frowny brows” telling me I was once again doing far too much.
Had you asked me a year ago if this might have ever been the way I would start my week—I would have laughed from the comfort of my racing bike as I sped forward into yet another century ride. And yet today, I find myself breathless walking up just these few very short stairs.

But, life changes. Everything changes. And sometimes the best (and only) thing we can do is to try to change with it.

I have a problem with my heart—one that has created much upset in my cozy little world, and causes me to pause each day just to check to make sure everything is still okay. I have often thought, how ironic it is that a hippie-Buddhist so in tune with her surroundings could be so totally and horribly out of sync on the inside.

Over this past year, I have been poked, prodded, and pushed to my own personal limits. And try as they might to fix this sort of problem, in all things there must be balance—between that which can be hoped, and that which can be achieved.

I have cried, and I have wondered why. I have had to look into the eyes of my children, and wonder things a 40-something year old parent shouldn’t ever have to think about. In each day, there are a million disconnected thoughts and emotions that pass through my being—leaving always, the most massive wake in their passing.

And when you’re not well accustomed to sorting and settling up with these types of things, it can be such that—in spite of your best intention and efforts—in the end, the wake will drag you down after all.

There have been many nights, most nights, where I lie awake—wondering if my heart would continue to beat through this night.

And with each passing night, I have found myself placing my hands over my chest in an odd attempt to bond with this strange thing that has caused so much upset in this, my little world.

Sometimes, I’ve even said a prayer out loud and to the rest of this great, big universe—just a few simple words—”Please God, not today.”

But in the end, and most of all, I have always reflected.

I have always tried my best, failing at times, to leave each moment either having learned something or having given something in return.

And more recently, I suppose I’ve been so much more aware of my impermanence on this great big spinning planet—often wondering if I will leave here, having made it just a little bit better, if only just for one person.

Life changes significantly when these become your greatest fears. Things that never seemed to matter become more important than anything at all.

But, I suppose perhaps this is the case with all things—and in these moments of our greatest change, we can all find a stillness and grace.

Sometimes, it takes the heart stopping for it to really open up again. In an odd way, this upset has become my greatest gift, my best teacher of all. Because with each heartbeat, I strive to become even that much more awake.

And in the end—and no matter what—I would rather live half a life lived fully, than a full one, lived with eyes wide shut. There’s an odd sort of peace with just that.

Those close to me will often ask, “How can you smile with all this uncertainty swirling about?” Perhaps, my smile gives way to my simple way of viewing things—even the ones that scare me most of all.

So this is the list—my short, simple steps—for living this life(mostly) fearlessly.

It’s far from perfect, and I’m sure there shall be more to add, in time. But, for now this list has done its job at keeping both these feet firmly to ground.

Be grateful—because gratitude will give you your “why” to each day.

Be present—because presence will help you to understand.

Be silly and smile—because the silliness will keep the seriousness at bay, and the smiling will show you your how.

Remember always, you are not your limits. And this fear is only as big as you allow it to be.

And although it may seem at times to cast a rather large shadow, rest assured—when you really look it square in its eyes—you’ll find this “beast,” is not so very big, at all.

Try not to let your fear ever change you—rather, with each day try to change your fear.

And perhaps, in lieu of being afraid of that storm—”adjust your sails,” and ride into it instead.

The Magic is You. (Elephant Journal)

On days, like today, when I am at the ‘almost very end’ and the night sky begins to gain its slightest of chills…

And right around that time, when my little pup climbs into my lap, to find his ‘most perfectly cozy’ resting spot…

I close my eyes, and find my breath and thank the stars for all these most wonderful things.

I think of all of those I love and whose love lights my path.

I think of all the moments I have shared and those that I hope are yet still to come.

But most of all, I am so ever-grateful, to be right here, right now.

And when it is, that I take this pause and think over these wonders of my day.

I realize that all of this magic, this loving-kindness has been, right here, all along.

So when it is that you may find yourself really struggling to find these wonders in your view…

Remember always, and after all—that this magic you seek, is you.

On Being Sick and Friendship.

My apologies to all and everyone who have been sitting here waiting for a post. I had all good intentions to share love with each of you everyday ~ but sometimes, life can get in the way of even our best intentions.

Last night, my dearest friend in this whole wide world - put a few things into perspective for me... suffice to say, there is much to think of and over... and I feel a bit that I've lost my writing spirit and hope.

So, I'm going to have to take a little time away to tend to my wounds, and try my best to heal from my recent surgery... and pray that health and healing will come my way.

As always, I send my love to each of you and hope that your patience will be here waiting for me when I return.

May the gratitude that is within you, become the blessings that surround you... *namaste* and with all my love...

Finally, the Science to Following Your Heart.

“Wherever you go, go with all your heart.” ~ Confucius

Life is short…too short, it seems. And we should never place ourselves in a position of looking back with a wondering regret.
Instead, we should always and everyday, find that one thing that makes our hearts smile big.
And when it is that we are lucky enough to find it, grab it tightly and never, ever let it go again.

And don’t let that brain get in your way, with those silly thoughts of ‘what might they think’ or ‘how will I know’…tell it to hush with its annoying chatterings of the ‘can’t's, the ‘shouldn’t's, the ‘wouldn’t's and the ‘no’s.

As a matter of fact, when it is that you become so forever blessed to finally find your dream, don’t be afraid to follow it endlessly and forever (or at least until the end of that rainbow).
Follow your heart, today, and all days and then, let the whole world know.
Life is short, so where will yours take you today?

“Let yourself be silently drawn by the stronger pull of what you really love.” ~ Rumi
